An Eventful 2008 – A Promising 2009

As a busy and fruitful 2008 draws to an end for America's Emergency Network, let's pause to review the year's impressive list of accomplishments – and share a glimpse of what 2009 will bring.

"I think the best way to put our goals for 2009 is that we want to extend the concepts and systems that we introduced in 2008 for government emergency centers to other markets, including health care facilities, schools and universities, and private businesses," said Bryan Norcross, AEN's president and chief executive officer.

More detail on that in a moment. But first, here's a look at our eventful Year in Review:

  • Was acquired by Brampton Crest International, creating a partnership that provided AEN with resources that fueled rapid growth during the year. Norcross subsequently stepped away from a four-decades-long career in broadcasting so he could devote full attention to AEN.

  • Charlie Crist on AENIntroduced its system during Florida's annual hurricane exercise, streaming live media events and situation reports from Florida's emergency operations center in Tallahassee to emergency management officials in counties and municipalities around the state and the public at large.

  • Signed a key pact with Hughes Network Systems LLC, becoming the first customer to use Hughes' innovative SPACEWAY 3 satellite. The deal enables AEN to transmit up to three simultaneous video streams from any location in the United States, southern Canada, Puerto Rico and several major Latin American cities.

  • Rapidly installed its system in many emergency management facilities in Florida, including the state's Division of Emergency Management in Tallahassee, Brevard County, Broward County, Duval County, Flagler County, Miami-Dade County, Putnam County, St. Lucie County, the Village of Islamorada, and Volusia County. Next up: the National Hurricane Center.

  • Tropical Storm FaySmoothly and swiftly converted an ongoing beta test into operational mode in response to a swarm of hurricanes and tropical storms. AEN streamed live briefings during Tropical Storm Fay's disastrous coast-to-coast tour of Florida and the threats from Hurricanes Gustav, Hanna and Ike. Some of Florida's leading newspapers arranged free public access to the streams over their websites. "This provides us with a whole different avenue to get the information out to the public," said Craig Fugate, director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management.

  • Entered into a consulting agreement with Peacock Productions, NBC News' in-house production company, located in New York City. Under the arrangement, AEN and Norcross are assisting NBC News in identifying new opportunities in programming content and technology in the fields of weather coverage and emergency information.

  • Made several key hires, including Chief Technology Officer Chris Bennett and Vice President of Sales and Marketing Janis Farnham. Also began monthly publication of the AEN Newsletter.

  • Was awarded first place in the prestigious ITFlorida competition in the category of Government Technology Leadership-Private Division. The awards honor notable achievements within Florida's information technology industry, and AEN's triumph certified the company's emergence as a leader in the field.

  • Adopted the Common Alerting Protocol 1.1 or CAP as its technical standard, conforming with a protocol subsequently selected by the Federal Emergency Management Agency for all emergency alerts.

  • Acquired and outfitted a new headquarters complex, now fully operational in downtown Miami. Also completely redesigned its website. For more on these developments, please see the articles elsewhere in this edition.

In 2009, Norcross said, the company intends to build on those accomplishments, reach more emergency management venues, and stretch into other fields that can benefit from AEN's technology.

"Nursing homes and assisted living facilities can share with residents' relatives live updates about what's going on at the facility – on a day-to-day basis and during an emergency situation." Norcross said.

"Schools and universities can provide real-time communication with parents, offering a daily update of school activities or critical information during an emergency." he said. "Businesses can conduct secure, private briefings for employees or feed information to the public and the media in the wake of an emergency or disaster or whenever the situation warrants."

And more...

"In addition, we'll continue to develop our product line, leveraging the full, secure capabilities of the live-stream distribution network we're building with Hughes," Norcross said.

Come See AEN's New Home

Our move is complete and our new home is ready to welcome guests.

The staff of America's Emergency Network is hard at work in its new, cutting-edge-technology complex, and we cordially invite you to visit us.

Located at 4700 Biscayne Boulevard in downtown Miami (just south of our previous location), our headquarters office features ample parking, a spacious lobby and reception area, larger executive and meeting spaces, a camera-ready briefing center and – most importantly – additional space for AEN's technical operations.

At its core is a fully equipped Network Operations Center, which allows AEN's technicians to monitor and control every element of the company's swiftly expanding network.

The Network Operations Center also provides substantial backup capabilities, including four paths to the Internet – key assets as AEN prepares for major growth during 2009.

AEN Stream Broadcaster"Our expanded office and technical space gives us the ability to fully demonstrate the capabilities of the unique streaming video network we've developed over the past year," said Bryan Norcross, AEN's president and chief executive officer.

"We've already had several visiting groups from government and the media stop by to see the system in action and discuss how it can improve their ability to communicate with the public," he said. "The consolidation of our technical, sales, and administrative staffs will allow us to deploy new configurations of the AEN technology aimed at new markets more quickly."

U.S. and Canada Renew Emergency Management Pact

The United States and its northern neighbor recently renewed a long-standing agreement to provide mutual emergency-management assistance during disasters or other crises.

The new pact was signed by U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Lawrence Cannon, Canada's minister of foreign affairs.

"Canada and the United States have a long history of working together in emergency situations," Cannon said. "Renewing this agreement increases our capacity to help each other in times of need."

The original agreement, signed in 1986, establishes the basis on which the two countries may help each other. That could involve the sending of supplies and equipment, emergency personnel and expert support from one country to the other.
